(c) Explain the term suppletion with an example.

Suppletion is when different inflectional forms of a word derive from entirely different roots. Example: go (present) → went (past). Went originates from a different verb historically but functions as the regular past form, filling the paradigm irregularly.


(d) Give the structure of a prepositional phrase with a tree diagram.

A prepositional phrase (PP) = Preposition (P) + Noun Phrase (NP). Example: in the garden.

Hyponymy is a semantic relation where the meaning of one lexical item (the hyponym) is included within the meaning of another, more general word (the hypernym). For example, rose, tulip, and jasmine are hyponyms of flower (their hypernym). Likewise, sparrow, eagle, and pigeon are hyponyms of bird. Hyponymy creates hierarchical lexical structure: the hypernym denotes a broader category, while hyponyms specify kinds within it. This relation is transitive: if X is a hyponym of Y, and Y of Z, then X is a hyponym of Z. Hyponymy is central to lexical semantics, ontology-building, dictionary organization, and natural language processing (e.g., taxonomies and semantic search).


(b) Briefly discuss the importance of Dr. Johnson’s Dictionary. (~130 words)

Syntagmatic and paradigmatic relations are two complementary ways of describing relationships among linguistic units in structural linguistics. Syntagmatic relations are horizontal: they concern how elements combine sequentially in an utterance or structure. For instance, in the phrase the quick brown fox, the combines with quick, quick with brown, and so on; each element’s meaning partly depends on its neighbors. Syntagmatic relations underlie syntax and collocation: which words can follow or precede others and how combinations form grammatical phrases and sentences.

Paradigmatic relations are vertical: they refer to substitution sets—words that can replace each other in the same slot because they share grammatical properties. For example, in the ___ runs, boy, dog, or athlete are paradigm members. Paradigmatic choice creates contrasts in meaning and shows oppositions—synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy. Difference: reflected meaning is a semantic influence across senses, often evaluative or connotative; collocated meaning is the effect of habitual word pairing on sense and idiomaticity. Derivational morphology produces new words from existing ones; derivations may change the grammatical class (part of speech) or maintain it.

Non-kernel sentences are derived from kernels via transformations: passivization, negation, question formation, relativization, subordination, etc. For example, from the kernel The boy eats an apple one can derive:

  • Passive (non-kernel): An apple is eaten by the boy.

  • Negative: The boy does not eat an apple.
  • Relative clause: The boy who eats an apple is tall.

Chomsky’s transformational-generative grammar used kernel vs. derived distinction to explain sentence formation rules: kernels reflect deep/basic structures; non-kernel surface forms result from transformational rules. The framework helps describe how varied surface sentences relate to simpler underlying templates, clarifying processes of derivation and helping model sentence generation and parsing.


(e) Phonetics and phonology (~230 words)

Phonetics and phonology are two interrelated branches of speech sound study. Phonetics focuses on the physical, articulatory, acoustic, and perceptual properties of speech sounds. (a) Grammatical changes from Old English to Modern English (~350 words)

English grammar has undergone major changes from Old English (c. 450–1150) through Middle English (c. 1150–1500) to Modern English (from c. 1500). The most salient trend is the shift from a synthetic (inflection-rich) language toward a more analytic (word-order and function-word dependent) system.

Old English resembled other Germanic languages with rich inflectional morphology: nouns, adjectives, and pronouns showed case (nominative, accusative, genitive, dative), number, and gender. Verbs had distinct strong and weak paradigms with many inflectional endings. Word order was relatively free because morphological markers indicated grammatical relations.

Middle English marked the beginning of morphological erosion. Language contact—especially with Old Norse and Norman French—led to loss or reduction of inflectional endings and the simplification of paradigms. As endings eroded, word order became more important to express syntactic relations. The definite and indefinite articles stabilized in form.
